June 2024 is the Month of Pride!

History:

LGBTQ Pride Month traces its roots back to the 1969 Stonewall riots in the USA, which started on June 28, 1969. The first Pride marches started the following year, on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the multiday riots, and these one-day celebrations eventually evolved into a full month of LGBTQ pride. Brenda Howard was the “Mother of Pride” and headed most of the Pride activities.

Howards’s fellow Committee member L. Craig Schoonmaker suggested the word “Pride” for the event. “A lot of people were very repressed, they were conflicted internally, and didn’t know how to come out and be proud. That’s how the movement was most useful, because they thought, ‘Maybe I should be proud,’” Schoonmaker said in 2015.
