Bauang, La Union | June 7, 2024

In observance of World Oceans Day, a significant coastal cleanup took place today across the beaches of Barangays Baccuit Sur, Baccuit Norte, and Taberna. This event was part of a nationwide effort led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to commemorate three important environmental observances: World Environment Day (June 5), Philippines Environment Month (June), and World Oceans Day (June 8).

The cleanup, themed “Our Environment, Our Future,” began at 6:00 AM and saw active participation from various sectors of the community. Municipal Employees, representatives of Line Agencies, Barangay Officials, residents of the said barangays and volunteers from various NGOs, joined forces to amplify their commitment to environmental stewardship.

The event also featured a brief program and educational talks from DENR experts, who highlighted the significant impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. They explained how plastics break down into microplastics, which are ingested by marine life, leading to harmful health effects. The experts also discussed the broader implications of plastic pollution, including its contribution to the decline of fish populations and the disruption of aquatic food chains.

Mr. Raymundo C. Gayo, DPA, Assistant Regional Director for Management Services, delivered a message on the critical role of community action in environmental conservation. Representing Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. De Guzman III, Mr. Wilson Samuel Caluza, Administrator for Operations, expressed gratitude to the participants and urged continuous efforts to safeguard our environment.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Marc Alvin Garcia, OIC MENRO, encouraged the attendees to remain engaged in such initiatives and serve as role models for others, highlighting that these efforts are vital for the well-being of future generations.

The coastal cleanup in Bauang is a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving the environment and their collective resolve to protect our oceans for the benefit of all.
